This is just part of the large Neolithic stone circle at Avebury, Wiltshire. Most of the old village is built within the circle. Each of the large stones were transported here by hand, and the entire circle is surrounded by a large ditch and wall which also dug by hand. It predated Stonehenge and had ceremonial significance. Some observers have noted that many rock resemble faces from certain directions, while some have clssed the rocks as male or female. Avebury is not confined to this circle. The ancient complex also includes avenues lined by rocks and Silbury Hill - see http://www.panoramio.com/photo/190916
