These markers were instituted by Benjamin Franklin, joint postmaster general during Colonial times, for the purpose of setting fair postal rates. I'm glad someone has taken an interest in documenting these disappearing markers. I know of a few in the area and will do the same soon. U.S. Geological Survey markers are another curious subject that may be found along the roadsides— usually at high elevations.
