Wow! Beautiful Photos.

Thanks for the link to the gorgeous photos, Greg. I looked at 'em all!

I took lots of orchid photos at the botanical gardens at Balboa Park in San Diego in June without getting a species name. I saw many of the same species I photographed in your collection. Are these plants all found in Australia, or was this sort of an Orchid 'show'?

Anyhow, thanks for sharing!

Hi Eve

This is a compilation of a number of different events. The photos tagged ANOCS are for the 'Australasian Native Orchid Conference and Show', while those tagged 'SPECIES Sydney' are from meetings of the Species Orchid Society of New South Wales, held monthly in Sydney. A similar society occurs in Brisbane (but I have few photos on digital formats from that society). Those tagged 'collection' come from the collections of either my father or myself (yes - the orchid bug is genetic...)

So, yes, these plants are all found in Australia, but the vast majority of them are 'exotic' species cultivated by hobbyists and fancers (a.k.a. orchid nuts). I could go through and place a tag on all the Australian species, but mostly that could be difficult to justify without tagging all of the others with their countries (often many more than one) of origin.

I have just loaded up another page of photos, and will have several more before I am finished with this alias - and then of course, it will increase after every opportunity I have to get to one of the meetings or a show...

Cheers, Greg

Hi Greg,

This is really an amazing collection!!Wonderful documented here. I'm interested in orchids too, but only the ones who are endemic here in Holland (The Netherlands)or Europe. Here u find some orchids (natural variation)of 1 species.

Thanks Erik

This orchid photos collection is mainly derived from mine or my father's (tagged 'collection') or from displays that I have visited, particularly the SPECIES society (Society for the Preservation, Enjoyment and Culivation of Indigenous and Exotic Species of orchids - cute eh!)

We are luckier than you in having many more native orchids, but I appreciate your interest in the European species. We see them very rarely in cultivation in Australia, as many of them require soil for transporting, and our quarantine laws prohibit soil import.

The photo you linked me to is a lovely one.

Another Panoramian that has been loading up European orchid photos is Michael Slattery.

As to myself, I have two other panoramio presences - one for general and landscape shots, and one for named plant photos. Please wander through them also as time permits.

Cheers, Greg Steenbeeke in Inverell, Australia.

Hello Greg,

Amazing collections!! i will wander through them.

By seeing u have this huge collection of namend plants (for as far as i've seen most are native to Australia) a nother question pops up.Your interest in Nature /plants is it just a hobby or has it a close relation with your work.

Thanks for the link to Michael Slattery i will explore his pictures too.

Greetings fom Esloo, Holland.

Hallo Erik

I work in Natural Resource Management, at the Border Rivers - Gwydir Catchment Management Authority, a state government instrumentality set up to act as brokers for knowledge and funds to landholders. My role with this organisation varies a bit, from project management to field operations. I have a background in vegetation mapping and am also a field botanist.

It is more than my work - I have that lucky situation where work and hobby come together.

Thanks for visiting, Greg
