It's very typical in Portugal, an official name, and a popular name. But nobody knows the official name.
In Braga the Praça Conde de Agrolongo is "Campo da Vinha", the Praça Alexandre Herculano is "Largo dos Penedos", the Praça da República is "Arcada".
In Lisbon the Praça D. Pedro IV is "Rossio", the Praça do Comércio is "Terreiro do Paço" and so on.
Not just in Portugal, in London the Leicester Square is pronounced "Lester Square".
