Hi Bram_be It's a small town called Nailsworth in Gloucestershire UK. I'd driven past many times before I noticed what the sign said. I'm afraid I don't know the history behind it, that's a little project for the future !

I would guess the hairdresser got annoyed with her customers going out in the rain and ruining all her hard work, so she took up the ancillary task of making umbrellas for them. My theory anyway, ha, ha!

There are still a couple of umbrella makers around, I recently saw something on TV about one of the few remaining in Germany. They even repair umbrellas! (where most people just throw them away!) Definitely something one should support! Greetings from Germany!

UncleVinny I do like your theory, very much. I'm going to use that in future. Thanks.
Lillimi I have been known to mend an umbrella once or twice, but they don't last for long. Unfortunately the shop hasn't been a hairdressers or umbrella makers for a long time, I would have loved to know what it was like.
