In order to facilitate trade in the 18th century navigation channels like this were constructed. Their purpose were to bypass sections of the river that could not be navigated. Boats were towed from the bank by horses. Nowadays the tranquil towpaths are used by fishermen and walkers. The channels have been reclaimed by nature and the occasional slow moving pleasure craft. a little more info here

No shortage of greens in Ireland Pam! The Irish name for Rath Ellen is Rath álainn. álainn means beautiful in English. Appropriate I think!

Thanks Gerry.
I sure did learn a lot about Ireland while I was over there, and became an Irish Fan. You know the Silken Thomas Legend? So, It was where I lived while over there.
In the property there was an old cimitery where laid the Fitzgeralds (Normand Family that came to hlep the Irish people against the Vikings and remain in Ireland) along side with the O'Tooles the tradicional family/clan of that area, they fight against eachother, since the O'Tooles were forced to move back to the moutains and leave the area for the Fitzgeralds.
Cheers
Alex
