Hi Catherine, there is a shelter (Seaman’s Hut) just visible in this photo on the right horizon in the saddle. It was built after a young man from the US died from exposure when a storm hit the mountains. His family paid to have the hut erected. It is small with 2 rooms and a wood stove for heat. There are many older huts in this national Park that are preserved from the days when cattle grazed. The huts where used in summer by the cattlemen for shelter. I have some photos of other huts here and here and here

Merci pour ces renseignements. je vois un petit rectangle au bout de la route, à l'horizon. En France, on a toute sortes de refuges. Et des refuges très rustiques où on dort sur de la paille.

Yes the small rectangle is the location of the hut - just off the road. The road is now closed to traffic but only 40 years ago it was possible to drive all the way to the highest mounatin in Australia! Your refuges are good to see and more substantial than most huts over here. They are very highly valued by the people who venture into these mounatins.

Greg, je connais un refuge, 2 places. Il y a une cheminée avec un trou dans le mur. Quand on fait du feu, il faut sortir de la cabane pour ne pas être asphyxié. Le sol est en terre, la table et les bancs sont des pierres empilées. Mais quand il pleut, on est bien content qu'il existe.
