The lighthouse of Ameland is sometimes called Bornrif, although this lighthouse has been given no name. The tower was built in 1880, commissioned by King William III. The tower was designed by Quirinus Harder and built by Nering Bögel, Deventer. The individual segments are shipped to Ameland and constructed on side.

After the Second World War a new, weaker light was put on the tower. This gave it the nickname 'Twilight Lamp'. In 1952, a new stronger light was placed. This light has a strength of 4.4 million candlepower.

Since 2004 the tower is owned by the Municipality of Ameland and since March 26, 2005, the tower is again open to tourists. The tower is used as exhibition space. At the top is a workroom arranged as previously used by the lighthouse keeper.

The lighthouse is 55 meters high and has 15 floors. The staircase has 236 steps to the top. The topof the tower is from the former lighthouse Ouddorp.
