The building on the water is the Martello tower at Finnavarra point. They were built at the beginning of the 19th Cent. for coastal defense during the Napoleonic wars. There were built all around the coast of Ireland. There are two on the south coast of Galway bay. The small building on the right of the tower was a barracks.

Thank you very much, Mike! I have seen quite many towers along the coast, since I have travelled all around the coast of Ireland. There are quite many on the South coast. May

There is also a chain of signalling towers which rings the coast from Napoleonic times. These are two stories high and rectangular or square in plan. Each tower was in view of the next and if the French fleet was sighted fires were lit or signals sent from tower to tower until it reached Dublin. These is one on the cliffs of Moher (not the round O’Briens tower which was a folly) to the south of where people visit.

Thank you very much, Mike! Finally I was able to give the photo a title. Actually I don't visit any places, where there are organized tourist's tours, I can't bear it. So I was only a short time up the cliffs of Moher.

The atmosphere of the original solitude gets entirely lost with tourists coming, taking a picture of themselves with the famous sight behind them to prove they had been here, without even noticing the beauty of the place and hurrying on to the next famous sight.

I love to discover places, where I can stay in silent dialogue with the sceneries or with some ruins and listen to what they tell me.

Thank you for the exact mapping of this picture!

Greetings, May

I know what you mean. :-) I try and find the small less traveled roads. Much more interesting. My idea of hell is a crowded beach on a summers day. One thing about the Burren is that when you move a few hundred meters off the small roads you may as well be the only person on the planet.

Yes Mike! I usually found the places, where I was the only one. I got lost more than once. In Galway I was completely lost one day on a very narrow road and felt as the only person on this planet, until I came to a small crossing, where two men mended the road. The counter for petrol was on zero, so I asked those men, where the next petrol station was. They left their work as it was and drove in front of me to lead me right to the petrol station, which was about 5 km distant. An unforgettable piece of Irish helpfulness. :-)
