Maybe you don't know but I've seen it treated very badly :-) sometimes with a balaclava cap, sometimes with a tin of coke in his hand or a flag of the local football team when Pisa won the champsionship wrapped around ... and so on :-) ... However, he is Ulisse Dini, well known mathematician and founder of the Pisa University

Thanks for the background info - clearly in the absence of a taller plinth old Ulisse is a soft target for student tomfoolery.
