This well preserved kilometre was "made of large blocks of hard limestone squared and then laid on the living rock; some of the blocks are more than 6.5' long, 2.5' wide and 4' thick. They were originally grooved to prevent horses from slipping, but have been worn smooth by long use, and in places deep cavities have been formed by the action of water.
