Pordenone surge durante el medioevo a lo largo del río Noncello como un puerto fluvial. Durante la época romana había asentamientos agrícolas. En el año 1278 pasó a poder de los Asburgos volviéndose un enclave austriaco en el Patriarcado de Aquilea.
