The historic Bowles House was begun in the 1780's, and predates the C&O Canal by about 50 years. Originally a one story house, it was later enlarged to two storys. Located at the east end of Hancock, the residents of the house farmed nearby acreage, and provided services such as selling goods and produce to persons working on the adjacent C&O canal. It has not been used as a residence for about 30 years, and now houses National Park Service displays about the history of the C&O Canal, as well as information about the mutual interaction between the C&O Canal and the local environment. The visitor center is open from Memorial Day through the end of October, Friday through Tuesday, from 9:00 AM through 4:30 PM.
