Teresa, Yvonne, minu, this is the hot spring in the center of Kusatsu, one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan. In the foreground is the spring itself. Leading into the backgroud are little channels allowing the hot water to cool off. In the process of cooling, sinter is forming on the bottom which is harvested and sold as bath additive. The wooden channels make harvesting the sinter much easier compared to harvesting it from the natural ground of the spring.

Thanks for your interest. Cheers, --michael
