My respect for all those magnificent HDRs! This one is my favourite. Which camera, technique and programs do You use?

Michael Braxenthaler on October 28, 2007

Thank you for the compliments, wsp.

I'm using a Nikon D50 set to exposure bracketing +/-2EV for a total of 3 exposures in raw format. Almost all my HDRs (except for the night shots) are free hand shots. For generation of HDRIs and tonemapping I work with Photomatix software. For tonemapping I use almost exclusively the enhancer algorithm. The tonemapping result is saved as a very low compression jpg. Typically there's some final touches to the jpg - final white point and color correction, cropping, etc. to produce the outcomes you see.

For the key step, the tone mapping, there is in my experience no such thing as a useable default parameter set. Each image needs its own adjustments and tweaking.

Hope that helps. Cheers, --michael

Dear Michael,

thanks for Your explanation. I generate my HDRs with Photomatrix and 3 bracketed exposures of a Leica Digilux 2, but lack the relaxed hand needed for freehand shots. So I always have to carry a small tripod. And, well, I know the passion of fine tuning HDR parameters until the result satisfies the expectations :)

Gruss, --michael
