Paljassaare Special Conservation Area is a bird area of pan-European importance where 222 species of birds have been registered (as of October 2009). Of birds met in Paljassaare, 81 species are under protection in Estonia.
The bird diversity in the area is secured by varied landscape providing good possibilities for resting and feeding (reed field, meadows, bushes, shallow sea), location on the migratory routes of birds and minor human impact throughout the decades.
