The fence of the Johan Willem Friso Kazerne (=barracks) Je maintiendrai (English: I will uphold) the motto Netherlands since 1815 and is on the front of the Dutch passport. The is actually the motto of the House of Orange-Nassau, which William of Orange inherited the principality of Orange by the legacy of René of Chalon. Originally, the motto was Je Maintiendrai Chalons, but changed it to William Je maintiendrai Nassau. After a while it became this just Je Maintiendrai.
During the Republic (1581-1,795) was the motto Concordia res parvae crescunt used (Eng: Unity is strength, also the motto of Belgium after the Belgian Revolution in 1830, or in French: L'union fait la force). When the House of Orange in 1815 got more power and was promoted to head of family hereditary stadholder through sovereign king,they took the motto of the Oranges for the United Kingdom of the Netherlands . The Netherlands kept the motto after the separation of the Low Countries in 1830.
