Thanks for your kind comment, Marilyn! It's impossible to capture the greatness of the place. You feel very tiny and humble there, just like everywhere else in the 'real mountains'. The lake behind the dam was 278m deep and contained about 363 million cubic meters of water at the moment that the photo was taken. All this is melting water from the glaciers, which lie behind. To the left, although not visible from here, you'll find the highest mountain of Switzerland, the Matterhorn.
If I can do you and others a favour I'll post some extra photos of our 2007 Swiss holiday.
Greetings,
Erik

My husband, now retired, taught water resource engineering. One day in 1985, he came here as a side trip from our short stay in Bern, while our young sons and I went to see Chillon. I didn't realize what we were missing! For our sons, however, even this spectacular a dam certainly could not have competed with a castle!
Greetings from Canada,
Marilyn

Then your sons will be pleased to see that my collection includes some castles as well, I assume...;-)
Greetings from Holland,

I'll point them in that direction. Meanwhile I showed all your Grande Dixence shots to my husband who was impressed and enjoyed them and reminisced a bit about his trip.
Greetings, Marilyn
