Broadway Tower (Broadway, Cotswolds, England)

Selected for Google Maps and Google Earth

Broadway Tower, a brown folly castle located on England's Cotswold Way and accessible via a steep climb out of Broadway Village, was designed by James Wyatt in 1794 and built for Lady Coventry in 1799. The noblewoman, curious as to whether a beacon lit on Broadway Hill could be seen from her house in Worcester (about 35 km away), sponsored the construction of the mock (or "folly") tower to find out. To her delight, its beacon could indeed be seen from her house. Wikipedia. Nearly a century later, Broadway Tower, extravagantly graced with turrets, gargoyles, and balconies, was frequently visited by Pre-Raphaelite artists William Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and Edward Burne-Jones, and it inspired Morris' campaign to preserve historic monuments.
