£350m Grain power station gets green light

The existing oil-fired plant at Grain A new £350 million power station is to be built on the Isle of Grain.

E.ON UK, the company that runs Powergen, has been given the green light for the plan by Trade and Industry Secretary Alistair Darling.

Work on the 1,200 megawatt gas-fired station could start next year, with electricity being generated by 2009.

The power plant will be at the same site as the existing oil-fired station on Grain.

E.ON UK says the new station will be the most efficient electricity producing plant in the country.

The company’s chief executive Dr Paul Golby said: "This new station will help us to bridge the gap between the UK's existing capacity and the generators of the future, helping to both keep the lights on for our homes and businesses and also ensuring a reduction in emissions.

"Our aim is to change the way we generate and use electricity in the UK and, to that end, we've committed to reducing the carbon intensity of our generation by 10 per cent by 2012.”

Earlier this month, E.ON UK announced £1 billion plans to build two new 800MW supercritical units at its Kingsnorth coal-fired power station on the Hoo Peninsula, a move it says would reduce carbon emissions by almost two million tonnes a year.

The company is also part of the London Array consortium hoping to build the world's largest offshore wind farm in the Thames Estuary.
