The Parthenon was dedicated to the goddess Athena, protector of the city and the goddess of war and wisdom. It was designed at once to house the chryselephantine statue of the goddess, Athena Parthenos, the work of Phidias, and to shelter money from the city and the Delian League. It was built of -449 to -438 BC by the architect Ictinos and decorated by the sculptor Phidias. Roger.
