In the 80's a group of adventurous souls maintained a commune in the ruins on Fort St Phillp. They called Vella Ashby. These photos were taken at a Summer Solstice gathering in 1987.
The fort was also used in WWII guarding the Mississippi. The concrete gun in placements were from the WWII era as well as the buildings.
This site on the east bank was a Spanish Fort, Civil War Fort (St Phillip) and a WWII gun battery.
The group moved to New Orleans around 1990. I don't know how they faired after Katerina. If anyone has any updates please add to this post.
Best regards

Those who were still in New Orleans when Katrina hit all weathered it fine. They're all still doing well.
