Farhad Tarash, Behistun Mount, Kermanshah, Iran

There are several opinions of the construction of Farhad Tarash. Some archaeologists consider it as an unfinished work by King Khosrow II who intended to had written an important event of his time on it.(more than 1400 years ago)

But locals and many other Iranians believe that the rock has been carved by a legendary personage, Farhad. Farhad was love-rival of King Khosrow. He has been sent on an exile to Behistun mountain by the King, with the impossible task of carving stairs out of the cliff rocks. According to the Persian legends, when he heard about marriage of his love, Shirin with the King Khosrow , fell himself from the mount and died. The word Farhad Tarash comes from this belief and means “carved by Farhad”.
