Pendarves was an important late-18th century country house (replacing residences dating back to the 16th century). The wood was planted and a lake created in the 19th century. During World War 2, the site was used as an American base. After this, the mansion was demolished and the estate abandoned to the wild.

Norton Mede, on October 13, 2007, said:
Pendarves wood was drasticly upgraded by a government scheme employing 14 unemployed men in 1983/4. It was proposed that the boathouse should be re-instated but the nature trust which ran the reserve would not pay for the materials. The main objective to remove Rhododendron and Laurel on a 4 acre section was achieved in 6 months and in a second 6 months the lake was cleared of weed and silt by hand.
