How this apparent Sequoia got into the Merced River and floated here is a mystery to me. It couldn't have come from the Merced, Tuolumne or Mariposa groves. So either it isn't a Sequoia or it isn't here.

Wonderful place to lose itself, Very many thanks for your pretty photo. Kisses

Bruce MacIver, on September 13, 2007, said:

Nice photo Chip -- there are several Sequoia groves upstream on the Merced, clinging to the steep granite faces along the valley walls. It might have come down in that big rock slide a few years ago and got washed down stream during one of the spring floods.

Greetings Chip, Beautiful scenery from the valley floor. Nice post processing. Thanks for sharing.

Cheers,

Rich

Chip Stephan, on September 13, 2007, said:

Thanks, redi, Bruce and Rich.

I'd forgotten about those scattered groves. This is a pretty recent appearance, Bruce. As far as I recall, it wasn't there on May 30, at least it's not in any of my photos that day. I don't recall seeing it on July 9, but I didn't take any photos at Valley View that day. The roots are pretty well worn down, so it's probably been in the river for a couple of years, at least. I hope it's still around after the high water in early winter and late spring. If it's as dry as last year, it probably will be.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the detail reply about how that picture was 'developed'... not developed at all, at least not traditionaly, but with software.

I imagige that is the techinique you use on this intesting picture of yours.

In case you have time to field another question, what is the easiest way to reply to someone's comments? I clicked on your name link in the email, then click on a picture to pull up a comment window....after scrolling to bottom of page!

Hmmm.... And I can see that this could be a habit. (now back to work for me!)

ciao!

Chip Stephan, on September 13, 2007, said:

Hi maryeo. Yes, this photo is HDR using Dynamic-Photo HDR sofware.

As to replying to comments, I don't know if there is a best way. I usually reply as I'm doing here, with a new comment on the picture whose comment I'm replying to. Sometimes, when I'm replying to someone's comment on another person's picture, I do it as you did here, by commenting on the another picture in that person's gallery. Seems to work for me. Of course, the picture that started this conversation has hundreds of comments and that was another reason to look for one of yours to reply on.

Ryan Calhoun, on September 15, 2007, said:

Wonderful color, Chip! You have all the basics, don't you? Red, green, blue, white. The tree is very powers (it's what attracted my attention) and the background scenery is amazing, as it always in in Yosemite. But my favorite bit here is the bright green grass in the field just beyond the fallen tree. Greetings, Ryan

I looked at this thing again yesterday (9/20/07) after 24 hours of rain, and it looks a lot worse for wear than it does in this picture. I no longer think it's a giant sequoia, but is probably a giant redwood, and thus more likely to be found in the Merced River. And even though I've been taking pictures at Valley View for years, and don't have any with this old critter in them, it looks like it's been there for a while.

Excellent shot! I think that the tree in the forground is a California Incense Cedar (Libocedrus decurrens) if my memory serves correct. Took dendrology 25 years ago. Cedars are much more comman than Redwoods and are pletenful in the valley.

Chip Stephan, on January 11, 2008, said:

Thanks, Mike. If it's an incence cedar (and it probably is), the genus could also be Calocedrus. I couldn't tell the difference if it were carved on the trunk. Interesting that the two genera have the same species name (decurrans Torr).

Herr Sonstiges, on January 28, 2008, said:

An interesting picture composition, the color contrast of the tree with the sky makes it very good! Yellow star for it.

Bruce Jensen, on March 5, 2008, said:

Chip, this is a gorgeous photo, makes me want to head up there right now! I believe that this tree is a red cedar, whose bark can be remarkably similar to a sequoia's, and which grow in great abundance along the riverbanks and slopes above the Valley.
