Petra (görögül: „szikla”) romváros Jordániában. A sivatag sziklái között megbúvó egykori karavánközpont egy arab néptörzs, a nabateusok virágzó fővárosa volt. A 7. századtól hanyatlásnak indult, fokozatosan elnéptelenedett és csupán a beduin pásztorok tudtak létezéséről. Petra ezer éven át elfeledett város volt; és csak 1812-ben fedezték fel újra. 1985 óta az UNESCO kulturális világörökségi helyszíneinek egyike.
Petra (greek; meaning rock) is a historical and archaeological city in Jordan. Established sometime around the 6th century BC as the capital city of the Nabataeans and the center of their caravan trade. It lies in the large valley running from the Dead Sea to the Gulf of Aqaba. The city started to decline rapidly under the Roman rule in the 7th century AD and shortly became completely deserted. The site remained unknown to the Western world until 1812 when western explorers rediscovered it. Petra has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985.
