This shrine commemorates the massacre of the Wendat (Hurons) in1649, an event which almost wiped the Huron people from existence. Their main enemies had been other groups of Iroquois tribes. The Hurons were agricultural, practising the raising of corn crops. Jesuit missionaries had already established a mission among them, now known as "Sainte-Marie among the Hurons". indyj@rogers.com
