Port Douglas is a tiny village of some 1,500 inhabitants, but spread about a large area. Palm trees line every street and every road, offering shade to picturesque houses, little shops, cafés, and restaurants. If you drive up to the Flag Staff Hill Lookout, you will get a panoramatic view of the Four Mile Beach on the other side of the village. The beach extends south in one gigantic left-hand bowstring, which is restrained from the right by a palm grove (see photo)
