This tallgrass prairie is part of Armand Bayou Nature Center, the largest urban wilderness preserve in the United States, located just outside Houston, Texas near the NASA Johnson Space Center. Tallgrass prairies are the grasslands where early settlers west of the Mississippi saw the huge herds of bison (buffalo) grazing. These tallgrass prairies are essentially gone. It's estimated less than 3% of the 240 million acres of tallgrass prairie remains.
