When I worked in this tower in the 70's It had a huge rubber bubble on top, which was replaced sometime in the early 80's with a rigid geodesic dome. The little balcony was a wonderfull place to view sunsets over Lake Superior. The whole of Isle Royal was visible on the horizon to the west.

From "Doc Mike" (Medic at this site): The Westinghouse-built AN-FPS 27a Radar was designed for a maximum range of 220 nautical miles and worked together with the AN-FPS-26 height finding radar to search to an altitude of 150,000 feet. "AN-FPS 27" stands for:
AN = Army (Air Force)/Navy F = Fixed (permanent) P = Pulsed radar S = Search 27 = The twenty-seventh design of that equipment.
