ROUSANOS MONASTERY IN METEORA (GREECE, THESSALY, METEORA) The monastery of Rousanos in the region of Meteora in Central Greece. These huge monoliths are a very rare geological phenomenon. In this region, between the 11th and 14th century, on the top of similar huge monoliths, Greek monks built 24 monasteries, in order to be protected from the bandits and pirates. Until the 20th century, monks, pilgrims and supplies reached these monasteries by means of rope-ladders, or by a movable wooden bridge (as seen in this image), but mainly by a big basket coming up and down by a winch mechanism manipulated by the monks on top. Today most of these monasteries are abandoned and ruined and only 6 of them remain renovated and can be visited. It is an unforgettable experience.
