This tower sits on the Ionian coast halfway between Gallipoli and Taranto in a beautiful stretch of coastline. This is one of over 50 towers that survive today having been built in the mid 16th Century by Emperor Carlos V as protection from the Turks who had been ravishing all of the Salentine peninsula. His order was issued after the Turks landed here in 1547 and burned the village and captured the inhabitants as slaves.
