Basilica medievale del 1500, che domina la pianura ai piedi di Assisi.
*Nel 576, venne edificata una piccola cappella dai frati benedettini.
*Nell’anno 1000, la zona era nota con il nome di Cerreto di Porziuncle, perché a quel tempo, era circondata da una vasta foresta.
*La cappella fu restaurata da San Francesco nel XII secolo, e vi morì nel 1226. Da allora prese il nome di Cappella della Porziuncola.
*Alla chiesetta si aggiunse poi un convento, tuttora esistente, con annesso museo.
*Nella seconda metà del XVI secolo, il papa Pio V fece innalzare la bellissima Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli. Su progetto di Galeazzo Alessi, come riparo della piccola Porziuncola, ormai divenuta meta di pellegrinaggio.
