La Peña de Bernal es el tercer monolito más grande del mundo, despues de Gibraltar y "el pan de azucar" en Brasil, se localiza en Bernal, municipio de Ezequiel Montes, en el estado de Querétaro, México. Según estudios realizados, se formó a partir de un volcán, que al agotar su actividad, el magma se tornó sólido, con el paso del tiempo y la erosión el resto del volcán desapareció, quedando sólo la lava solidificada que ahora constituye la peña.

La palabra «Bernal», que da su nombre tanto al pueblo, como al monolito, es de origen árabe y fue usada por los conquistadores para nombrar un peñasco grande y alargado, que se encontrara aislado. El pueblo bajo sus laderas fué fundado en 1647.

La Peña de Bernal is the third largest monolith in the world, after of "Gibraltar" and " Pan de azucar" in Brasil, is located in Bernal, Ezequiel Montes municipality in the state of Queretaro, Mexico. According to studies, is formed from a volcano, which by depleting its activity, the magma became solid, with the passage of time and erosion the rest of the volcano disappeared, leaving only the solidified lava that now makes up the rock.

The word "Bernal", which gives its name both to the people, like the monolith, is of Arab origin and was used by the conquerors to appoint a large rock and long, that was isolated. The town was founded in 1647.
