The MS Balmoral berthed at Cruise Terminal 1 (CT1) on the Admiralty Pier in the Western Docks of Dover Harbour. The photo was taken at 3.55 pm on Friday, 2nd of July, 2010, from just before the Turret (at bottom right-hand edge).

Part of the grey-fronted Cruise Terminal 2 building (complete with flags) can be seen to the right of the passenger ship.

In the background to the left is the Southern Breakwater in front of which are a number of vessels engaged in removing the wreck of the Spanish Prince (a First World War blockship scuttled in 1915) from the Western Entrance: the Sarah Grey tug/multicat, Waasland sea barge, Gaverland flatbed barge, and Haven Seafield flat-top barge. The North Cardinal Buoy is just about visible in the larger size of the photo.

The Fred Olsen Balmoral had just finished a 12-Night "Baltic Cruise" which started at Dover on the 20th of June. Itinerary: Brunsbuttel (on the mouth of the Elbe river, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany), Holtenau (Kiel Canal Pilot, Germany), Kiel (capital of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany), Tallinn (capital and largest city of Estonia), St Petersburg (located on the Neva River at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Baltic Sea, Russia), Helsinki (capital and largest city of Finland), Stockholm (capital and the largest city of Sweden), and Copenhagen (capital and largest city of Denmark). Later in the day the passenger ship began a 15-Night round-trip "Gateway to the Arctic" cruise. Itinerary: Narvik (Norway), Honningsvag (northernmost city in Norway), Circumnavigate Bear Island (southernmost island of the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, western part of the Barents Sea), Ny Alesund (one of the four permanent settlements on the island of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, Norway), scenic cruise Moffen (a small, low island north of the mouth of Wijdefjorden, on the northern coast of Spitsbergen, Norway)), cruise Magdalene Fjord (Spitsbergen, Norway), Longyearbyen (Spitsbergen, Norway), Tromso (Troms county, Norway), and Bergen (second largest city in Norway). Abridged extract from History of the MS Balmoral (2):

The vessel was built by Meyer Werft of Papenburg, Germany in 1988, for service with Royal Cruise Line as the Crown Odyssey. In 1989, Royal Cruise Line was sold to Norwegian Cruise Line, which continued operation of the company, along with the Crown Odyssey until 1996. A reorganization of all of the fleets owned by Norwegian Cruise Line saw Crown Odyssey enter service with NCL's main fleet, and it was renamed Norwegian Crown.

Following the purchase of Orient Lines by NCL in April, 2000, Norwegian Crown was transferred, regaining her original name, Crown Odyssey, in the process.

In September, 2003, Crown Odyssey was refurbished and returned to the NCL fleet, again with the name Norwegian Crown.

On May 25, 2006 - NCL Corporation announced that its parent company, Star Cruises, had agreed to sell Norwegian Crown to Fred Olsen Cruise Lines effective August 2006. Star Cruises concurrently chartered the vessel back from Fred. Olsen and NCL continued her deployment through to November 2007... ...Her last NCL cruise was on October 28, 2007.

During a January 21, 2009 cruise the ship sailed into rough weather in the Bay of Biscay smashing through 50 ft waves & 60 mph winds. Two of the passengers were sent to a hospital in La Coruna, Spain for serious injuries.

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and AIS Base stations. AIS information supplements marine radar, which continues to be the primary method of collision avoidance for water transport.
