The Tate & Lyle factory in the background refines sugar-cane from Cuba. Often, Cuban boats will arrive, and the crew, with a few days shore-leave, will walk in flip-flops, shorts and T-shirts, the 9 miles to Leicester Square - not having the money for expense such as bus-fare. £2.00p in Cuba goes a long, long way. Tate & Lyle is also behind the sugar-substitute SPLENDA; and Mr Tate has bequeathed at least 4-galleries' worth of art to Britain - a lot of hard work by 'some poor, hard-pressed, downtrodden folks' to pay for all that free art!
