Parallel ridges of rock and finger lakes mark the direction the glacier came from that scraped away all of the soil and left these starkly beautiful barrens.
I believe geologists have guessed the most recent glacial retreat from this area was around 14,000 years ago. One would have to go quite a ways north to find any permanent ice. Perhaps as far as Baffin Island or Greenland?
Thanks for your answer Craig. Glaciers are interesting. It snows so much at NZ that there are a couple of glaciers (fast moving,wet glaciers) that reach down into a moderate climate, actually occupying the same space as a rainforrest.
