The Abbey of San Salvatore and Lorenzo in Settimo (seven miles from the center of Florence), enclosed by walls and towers, with moat and drawbridge, is remembered for the miracle of the fire test. The monaco Vallombrosan Giovan Gualberto charges of simony neo Bishop Peter Mezzabarba (bought the office of bishop with 3000 pounds of gold). Asked for and obtained, with the favor of the people, a judgment of God, and on February 13, 1068, at Badia a Settimo, a friar - who will become cardinal and San Pietro Igneo - pass unharmed between two piles on fire. It is a miracle, the bishop is deposed, Giovan Gualberto triumphs.
