Hi Ian, the canal boats could carry thirty tons at a time with only one horse pulling. However, they usually required a Skipper, 2 crewmen and a boy to lead the horse. One of the main reasons for heavy loads being taken by road was cost. The boat men couldn't make thirty tons pay.
