Looking east from N13. Prior to the June 6, 1944 invasion of Normandy, Erwin Rommel ordered the opening of these gates, among others, during the English channel high tide and closed the gates during low tide. This flooded the river valleys and created a water hazard for the paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne.
