The Sinhala (language) name ‘Pabalu Vehera’ when translated means ‘Beads Dagaba / Stupa’. It is believed that the name is one that has been given to it more recently, especially as the chronicles do not refer to a stupa / dagaba by this name. However, it is also believed that this stupa / dagaba which is now ruined, is that of the stupa / dagaba said to have been built by ‘Rupavati’ who had been a consort of King Parakramabahu I (1153 -1186 AD).
