This is the Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu I (1153 -1186 AD) and had been named ‘Vaijayantha Prasadaya’ after the adobe of Hindu God ‘Indra’. The chronicles describe the palace to have been seven stories high and contained a thousand chambers. Although this may have been an exaggeration, even today, it retains ruins of three stories and taking into account all the outhouses of the palace, the number of chambers given in the chronicles may be correct.
