After a walk along the 'Hudderfield Narrow Canal' near my home, I thought I would share our world famous tunnel with you.
"The Standedge Tunnel is the longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel in Britain. It is 5,500 yards (5029 m) long, 638 feet (194 m) underground at the deepest point and 645 feet (197 m) above sea level." (Yahoo Answers)

Thanks shalom, I have just this moment written more information about this tunnel onto the next photograph here. This new gate was installed after the re-opening of this tunnel in 2001 and show the bargemen 'legging' a boat like this through it. Thanks for your comment. Kind regards, Herb

Looking at this photo x 2, I was admiring the gate but wondered why it had legs there! - now I see why. Thanks for the info, it's a very good gate and like the picture. ;~)

Hi Herb! I LIKE it! The smith who forged gate for the tunnel of the ' Hudderfield Narrow Canal ' was the big humorist. I have dream for all my life to find for myself work by which it is possible to do "upwards by a paunch" :-))

* Herb* a thought provoking photograph. And well worth the research where....
THERE’S MUCH MORE THAN LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL
:o)
I love the gates. Do you need a key to get in? How does that work?
Cheers ol' buddy - Jethro

Garcia, Rob, Dušan, Rosa, Slavia, ايوب فارابي) and Jethro very happy you all share your interest and enjoyment of Standedge Tunnel with me. The purpose of this tunnel was for working canal barges to go through our 'Pennine' hills here in the NWest of England. The gates are quite modern and depict a barge going through the tunnel and the means of power (by legging (walking) on the sides and roof of the tunnel). It was closed for many years then reopened in 2001, when the canal was restored for barges once again to travel underneath these hills. However, I don't think modern barges will allow people to lie down and 'leggit' through the tunnel nowadays and so when tourist want to travel through here -they telephone the main office of this tunnel (at the other side of the hill) and an electric launch tows the barge through here. (As no diesel motors are allowed because of dangerous fumes escaping?) The tow is cost free! The gates are kept locked to stop unauthorised/unsupervised entry by boats and people alike (not that there is any pathway to walk anyway.) Phew! More Info here. Thanks for the likes guys.

What a fantastic sculpture! I've heard about "walking" through these tunnels, but this makes it so much more real. (Horatio Hornblower did it, for example.) Thanks for posting.

Rob - yes, if you are ever near here give me a call and I shall show of our local photographic gems!
Nawitka - so nice to see you again. It's been a while! Like Bob, maybe you will have you visit and see these places for real. It is possible to take a trip through here, albeit in an electric barge. (see link above).
