Locals tell me that Dutch sailors broke the door down in search of any treasure they might steal. This was the Dutch naval blockade of Rochester. However, damaging foreign churches (of any creed or religion) was against the Dutch Naval Code and their Admiral ordered them to mend the door. They did this using top quality oak timber. Take a look at the repair they made, if you ever visit Grain. It is clearly the work of highly skilled shipwrights: water-tight for sure! In fact, the repair is to a higher standard of carpentry than the door itself. Take a walk along the foreshore here. You get a good sight of in-bound and out-bound shipping and of the strange-looking Fort which stands on stilts at the sea-entrance to the Medway. Windy place. Friendly people.
