I do not understand the title line.
The Salton Sea was never California's 'only remaining wetland'. Not even close.
I would suggest you investigate California's central vally. Extending north along the Sacramento river and south along the San Joaquin and up into the SIerra Nevadas and Cascades, the central valley is a massive system of wetlands. Plenty of ground has been drained and put to agricultural purpose to be sure, but the Salton doesn't even begin to compare, let alone stand as the 'only remianing wetland' in California.
It smells pretty bad at times and the foundation isn't very sound either brand new homes that have recently been built have to drastically drop in value due to such shifting in the earth
