What an amazing Photo. the framing, the human element contrasting with mighty nature and the very unusual colours for a natural scene. Love it

I had taken a geologist out to visit some sites where I work. When I found out he was flying to the base of St Helens and hiking up into the crater the next day, I jumped at the chance when he asked if I would like to go along.

The dome has grown much larger since 1987. In September 2004, a steady lava dome-building event began. The dome is now (October 2007) taller than the Empire State Building.

You got really outstanding chance to get there in helicopter, we usual persons are porhibited from climbing into crater (which is also dangerous because of constant falling rocks).

It has been some years since I had the opportunity to enter the crater. I do remember the constant sound of falling rocks.

I am again one of the usual people. I try to get to the area several times a year and enjoy hiking the trails right below the mountain.

Best regards, Larry
