The icon is over the actual gate, (which is now on private property, as Paramount bought the street in front of it from the City. The Cafe is gone. Photogs position is probably 200 ft S/E of icon, where the red roof of the guard house is now visible in Google Earth...

Great shot! This is the original gate on Marathon(as Gloria Swanson drove up to it in Sunset Boulevard). To the right would have been the old Western Costume building. When they moved to the San Fernando Valley, Paramount bought the property and moved their main gate out to Melrose. The Marathon gate still exists but is now only ornamental.

To the left is an old Bank of America branch building, also now part of the studio lot. The old logo showing a ship, Portsmouth , can still be seen at the corner of the building. The cafe was called "Olblats" during part of its life. To the left of Olblats were several other storefronts, including a barbershop. I used to go there as a child in the '40s and would sit chair to chair with a bunch of cowboys on a break from shooting scenes across the street.
