Nice picture with the sun at the leaves of the tree. Is this a former trainstation Ian? Greetings Berend
It is such a beautiful place. There never was a railway to Glenorchy, and I do not know the history of the sign. Was it custom made for this information centre that is housed in this building? does it come from Glenorchy in Tasmania? was it created for the steamer that carries tourists out of Queenstown around Lake Wakatipu?
Perhaps one of the GE viewers of this photo may enlighten us one day.
Greetings from New Zealand.
I agree with Berend. Nice trees against dark background. I have jot down the name "Glenorchy" for my eventual visit to Queenstown. LIKEd
The steamer on Lake Wakatipu, the S.S. Earnslaw was operated by NZ Railways until the 1960s, and the building was a part of their infrastructure. The S.S. Earnslaw seviced all of the settlements and stations on the lake, including Glenorchy, because there were no roads or only very rudimentary roads, including the access to Glenorchy.
Thank you very very much, Ash61. That sort of local knowledge enhances the photo, Panoramio and Google Earth.
Berend from NL now has a valid answer to his query, too.
