The Silver Spring Armory was constructed in 1914, housing Maryland National Guard Company K, which was created by Capt. E. Brooke Lee and Lt. Frank L. Hewitt. The station's Colonial Revival facade replaced the Armory's original Gothic Revival one in 1932. Company K later served in World War I. The historic Silver Spring Fire Station was originally built as The Armory but when the new Armory was built in 1927 at the corner of Wayne Avenue and Pershing Drive, the building was occupied by the Silver Spring Fire Department. The Silver Spring Fire Station #1 has moved to the new fire station building across Georgia Avenue next to the historic Silver Spring B&O Train Station. The Silver Spring Fire Department purchased the Silver Spring National Guard Armory in 1919. Renovations were made that summer to the 6000 square foot building allowing it to house apparatus, hold meetings and host community affairs. Now, almost a century later, The Department has been replaced with a new larger facility located across the street from the new restaurant and adjacent to the historic B&O train station. The old Department, now called Fire Station 1, was purchased by Jeremy Gruber, a retired Montgomery County Firefighter/Paramedic, fulfilling his dream of opening Fire Station 1 Restaurant and Brewing Company, a full service restaurant where good food and good people come together. Fire Station 1 Restaurant & Brewing Co. wishes to pay tribute to those brave firefighters, both volunteer and career, who either had once or currently continue to serve the people of the Silver Spring community.
