I've looked at your photo before, Ian, but haven't expressed my enjoyment. You found a way to get an excellent shot. National icon, indeed!! I've been there three times, the last in 1977, with my parents and our young sons. (My mother had taught high school English, so "Hamlet's castle" was almost a pilgrimage site for her.) We made a four-country Scandinavian trip almost entirely by public transportation. This was one of two days we rented a car, so we could see both this and the Roskilde Viking ships on the same day. The other car rental day enabled us to visit Legoland--a necessity, as you know, for families with young children. (Ours were six and eight.) Marilyn

Marilyn, In all my conversations I must have mentioned Legoland somewhere did I? Our two were 6 and 8 when we visited legoland in '78. And what a day it was. And like your Mother, for us Hamlet was a set Shakespearean play that we studied for matriculation. So it was a pilgrimage - a must do too. When in Roskilde we attended a whole line up of infant baptisms in the cathedral, before all the other experiences. But the highlight there, for us, was the Iron Age Experimental and Research farm at Lejre. We both love our travels, you and I. Ian

Ian, I think I happened to see you mention Legoland in a conversation with someone else. I knew it would take an inordinate amount of time to confirm my memory so I didn't try. I've now checked your photos of the Iron Age farm. It's not surprising that it reminded me of the partially reconstructed Viking site in Newfoundland! (When I get around to scanning slides this winter, I should find some of it.)

What rich travel memories we do enjoy! Marilyn

Hi Ian. You sure know how to hit the soft spot of a dane. Brilliantly done. Btw love to go lost in your world of pics :-) Peter

Ian Stehbens on February 25, 2008

Thankyou Peter.

And thankyou to all Danes for your wonderful hospitality whenever I am among you. It may have something to do with my Schleswig-Holsteiner ancestry, but whenever I am in Denmark, I feel right at home for your culture and mine has so much that is identical. You embrace me, I immerse myself in your world, and then I feel a great empathy. Perhaps that's why managed to hit the soft spot, Peter.

Last time, we used Copenhagen airport as our port of entry into Europe after a long flight from Singapore.

I loved Helsingør, Lejre, Copenhagen, Odense, Ribe, ....

Hi Ian, Brilliant shot. Congratulation. But I think you should change the title. There is no Helsingør Castle, but Kronborg Castle, Elsinore OR Kronborg Slot, Helsingør. A national icon. Regards Bentler, Helsingør.

Ian Stehbens on June 8, 2008

Thanks Bentler, I really appreciate local guidance and expertise.... and your affirmation.

What a wonderful country you live in!

I wonder what Mr Shakespeare would make of "Kronborg Slot"?

Very nice to look at.

Ian Stehbens on February 21, 2011

Thank you, Izá. I thought this was very much an iconic statement about Denmark.

Ian Stehbens on October 7, 2011

Thank you Mirk0. As iconic Denmark as I could get without photographing the Sydney Opera House!
